SEEDs for Autism: Sewing Their Way To Independence

August 1, 2013

Employment & Vocational SupportTeens & Adults With Autism

SEEDs for Autism is an innovative program in Phoenix, Arizona that connects local artists with young adults on the Autism Spectrum, to teach vocational and life skills, while fostering a strong sense of community and resiliency. Guided by their mentors, SEEDs students design, create and produce a wide variety of marketable art products from doggie castle beds to sophisticated beaded jewelry to metal sculptures.

SEEDs' Fiber Arts Department is the organization's newest addition. They work from donated fabrics and upcycle thrift store garments. The department has been working with donated sewing machines, some of which are over 40 years old. They break down frequently, and are expensive to repair. Many times, there are not enough working machines for all students to use.

GIVE NOW to this very worthwhile initiative that is helping give adults with Autism valuable job skills! Your pledges will go towards buying several sewing machines and a serger, with maintenance contracts to ensure that they stay in good working order. They would also like to buy thread, fabrics, and accessories. This will allow their students to create a broader range of products, such as purses, tablet cases and seat cushions.

As our way of thanking you for your pledges, they are offering a variety of the SEEDs products created by our students!
